Spiez Castle

Spiez Castle stands on a spit of land reaching into the bay: a keep, a manor house, a Romanesque church and a park, at one of the few points on Lake Thun where you can approach a castle from the water. For anyone based in Interlaken it is an obvious cultural half-day that also works in the rain — with one caveat that is scattered across the operator's own pages and comes first here: only the museum has a season. The park and the church are open all year and free.

Getting there: 35 minutes, 19 of them on the train

35 minutes from Interlaken Ost to the castle, no change, measured on the Swiss timetable for a Wednesday in the summer schedule as the day's minimum across eight departures. The figure ends at the castle rather than at the station, and here that difference is unusually large: the train leg alone is 19 minutes, the rest is the walk down from Spiez station to the bay. The timetable counts that walk itself — it lists a stop called «Spiez, Schloss» — and allows roughly a quarter of an hour on foot, downhill on the way there and uphill coming back.

That does not make Spiez the closest of the Lake Thun destinations in our overview: St Beatus Caves sit at 20 minutes in the same table, and Thun at 34 minutes is a minute nearer than the castle. Thun is the better add-on for all that: both are on the same railway line, so two castles in one day is a straightforward plan.

What it costs — and what is free

The castle museum costs adults CHF 12.00, reduced CHF 10.00 (disability-benefit holders, students and apprentices on production of a card, and groups of twelve or more), children aged 6 to 16 CHF 5.00; under six is free. During the art exhibition «Otto Nebel. Farbe Sprache Form» from 19 June to 18 October 2026 a combined ticket costs CHF 16.00 (reduced CHF 14.00, children CHF 7.00). There are two family tickets, both valid for the museum only: CHF 20.00 for one adult with up to four children, CHF 30.00 for two adults. The castle park and the castle church cost nothing. The operator states «Freie Besichtigung / ohne Eintritt» — free to visit, no admission — for both, and the park is open year-round. So if you only want the grounds and the view across the bay, you pay nothing at all: the twelve francs buy the museum inside the manor house, not access to the site.

Where the Swiss Travel Pass is worth more than the regional one

Unusually for this region, the Swiss Travel Pass gives free admission here rather than a discount. The operator lists it under «Freier Eintritt Schlossmuseum und Kunstausstellung», together with the Swiss Museum Pass, ICOM, Raiffeisen MemberPlus and the Kulturlegi.

The regional cards sit one step lower: guest cards of the region, the Berner Oberland Pass, the Camping Card Berner Oberland and the BLS Seepass give 20 per cent off — and, unlike the free admission above, on the castle museum only; the art exhibition is not in that block. That is the reverse of the situation at the mountain railways around Interlaken, where the regional pass often beats the national one — which is exactly why it is stated here rather than in the small print. If you are travelling Switzerland on a Swiss Travel Pass and wondering what it actually covers beyond transport, this is one of the clear cases.

Three parts, one season

The site splits into three parts and only one of them closes. Museum, shop and castle café are open from 1 May to 31 October 2026: Mondays 14.00 to 17.00, Tuesday to Sunday 10.00 to 17.00, and daily until 18.00 in July and August, with last admission half an hour before closing. A winter break then runs until 30 April 2027.

The castle park stays open all year. The castle church is open during the winter break from Monday to Friday, 10.00 to 17.00, and closed at weekends; during the season it follows the museum hours instead, except Fridays when it closes at 12.00 and Saturdays when it is given over to weddings. All details checked with the operator on 18 August 2026. A winter visit is therefore possible and worthwhile for the setting — you just do not get the museum.

The last boat back

The finer approach is the scheduled boat: 1 hour 44 minutes from Interlaken West to the Spiez boat station, direct, past the St. Beatus Caves and the vineyards of the northern shore. If you take it, check the return first: the last sailing back leaves at 16.08 and reaches Interlaken West at 17.51 — while the museum is open until 17.00, and until 18.00 in July and August.

The plan that works is therefore asymmetric: boat out, train back. That way you get the crossing and still have the whole afternoon at the castle. Boat both ways only works if you finish the visit in the early afternoon. Timetable data for Wednesday 12 August 2026, checked on 11 August 2026; outside the boat season the sailing does not run and the train is the only option.

Is it worth it?

Probably yes if you want a half-day of culture that holds up in bad weather. The museum is indoors, the journey is short, and the family ticket pays for itself from the second child aged 6 to 16 — with a single child, single tickets are cheaper, for both family tickets. On a Swiss Travel Pass it is one of the few destinations in the region where the pass covers admission entirely rather than trimming it.

Probably not if you came for mountains and panoramas. Spiez Castle sits at lake level; the view is across the bay, not over a skyline of summits. For Lake Thun seen from above, the Sigriswil Panorama Bridge or Beatenberg serve you better — and if you are coming from 1 November onwards, you get the park and the church and nothing else.

Where it is

The castle stands at Schlossstrasse 16 in 3700 Spiez, on the spit of land between the bay and the vineyard slope. Coordinate and terrain height come from the federal gazetteer and elevation service (queried 11 August 2026, listed there as «Historisches Areal Schloss Spiez»); the measured point is at 559 metres, effectively lake level — Lake Thun stands at 558 metres.
