The square, and why it looks different
Interlaken was built for guests in the nineteenth century — the Höheweg, the hotel row, the meadow left open between them for the view. Unterseen is older and was built for nobody but itself. Founded in 1279, with a closed square, timber houses and a church tower that appears in half the photographs of this region without most people knowing where it stands.

Half an hour, and what to do with it
The circuit across the square, through the lane and over the Aare bridge takes about thirty minutes. Photographers stay longer: the late afternoon light on the row of houses is the real reason to come. As a day trip Unterseen is nothing; as an hour between two mountain railways it is excellent — and it costs nothing.
