In short
A tunnel railway through the Eiger to a station at 3,454 m, a glacier you can walk out onto and the longest glacier in the Alps below you. It is also the most expensive thing you can do here, and the one whose value collapses entirely in cloud.

Chapter 01
What it costs
from CHF 129.60 is what the operator lists for the return ticket, checked on 17 September 2026. Three things about that number are worth saying plainly. It carries no departure station — it is not a fare from Interlaken Ost, and it is the entry fare, not the usual one. It is also not the whole bill: from 1 May to 31 October 2026 the seat reservation is mandatory, and the operator calls it «kostenpflichtig» — chargeable, CHF 10 per person, explicitly including children. Inside that window the entry figure is therefore CHF 129.60 plus CHF 10 a head, not CHF 129.60. And unlike most Swiss mountain journeys, a GA or Swiss Travel Pass does not cover the top section: they reduce it. Whatever pass you hold, the last stretch above Eigergletscher is paid separately.
For comparison inside this region: the Schilthorn costs from CHF 115 from Lauterbrunnen — less, for a summit 2,970 m high with a revolving restaurant. Jungfraujoch is not competing on view alone; it is selling the railway, the altitude and the glacier.
Chapter 02
The only question that matters
Check the summit webcam the morning you plan to go. Not the valley forecast — the two disagree constantly, and in opposite directions. When cloud sits low over Interlaken, the train often climbs straight through it into sunshine, which is the best possible day up there. Under a high overcast, the valley looks passable and the summit is a grey room with windows.
This is why the honest advice is to keep the day flexible rather than to book it early. It is the single excursion here where moving the date is worth more than any discount.
There is also an intermediate stop where that decision can be deferred: you change trains at Kleine Scheidegg anyway. From there the Eiger north face stands directly overhead — from the Jungfraujoch it cannot be seen at all — and if the weather above looks wrong, you simply do not get back on.
Kleine Scheidegg: getting off or riding on, with both travel times
Chapter 03
Getting there
97 minutes each way from Interlaken Ost on the fastest connection, with two changes: up the valley via Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, then Kleine Scheidegg, then the tunnel railway inside the Eiger. From Zurich add roughly two hours in each direction — feasible as a day trip, but a long one, and it removes the flexibility that makes the trip worth taking.
Chapter 04
What is up there, and how long it takes
The Sphinx terrace, the Ice Palace inside the glacier, the Alpine Sensation walkway, the snow plateau and restaurants. Two to three hours is enough, and the limit is usually not interest but altitude: at 3,454 m most people move slowly and tire quickly. Plan less than you would at valley level, and do not plan a hike on the same day.
Chapter 05
Buying a ticket
One operator runs the whole chain, so there is nothing to compare and no provider to choose. The resellers that fill the search results add a margin and not much else — with one genuine exception worth knowing about: the operator's own early departures are sold as a cheaper "Good Morning" ticket, which is a real saving if you are willing to start early.

Weather at 3,454 m
The forecast applies to 3,454 m above sea level — 2,886 metres above Interlaken (568 m). The temperatures are computed for that altitude, not for the valley. The weather word for each day, by contrast, describes the area as a whole — it can say «overcast» while the destination itself sits above the cloud.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Jungfraujoch worth the money?
In clear weather, genuinely yes — a glacier at 3,454 m, the ice palace and the view down the Aletsch, Europe's longest. In cloud you have paid from CHF 129.60 to stand in fog. That is the whole answer, and it means the decision is a weather decision, not a budget one: check the summit webcam on the morning, and keep the day movable. This is the one excursion in the region worth rearranging a holiday around.
How much does Jungfraujoch cost from Interlaken?
from CHF 129.60 is what the operator lists for the return ticket, checked on 17 September 2026 — but it names no departure station at all. On top of it, from 1 May to 31 October 2026 the seat reservation is mandatory, and the operator calls it chargeable: CHF 10 per person, children included. Inside that window you pay at least CHF 129.60 plus CHF 10 a head. From Interlaken Ost, budget considerably more: this is the entry figure, not the typical one. A Swiss Travel Pass or GA gives a reduction rather than free travel, because the section above Eigergletscher is not covered by any general travelcard. Budget more than the headline number.
How long does it take from Interlaken?
97 minutes each way to the station at 3,454 m, measured as the fastest day connection, with two changes — Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald, then Kleine Scheidegg, then the tunnel railway through the Eiger. Allow a full day: just over three hours of travelling plus the time you actually want up there.
Can you do Jungfraujoch as a day trip from Zurich?
Yes, and a great many people do — but it makes for a long day. Zurich to Interlaken Ost is about two hours each way on top of the 97 minutes from there, so you are looking at roughly seven hours of travel around two or three hours at the summit. If the weather is right it still works. If it is uncertain, staying a night in the Interlaken area is what lets you move the trip to the better day.
What is there to do at the top?
The Sphinx observation terrace, the Ice Palace cut into the glacier, the Alpine Sensation walkway, a plateau you can walk out onto in snow year-round, and restaurants. Two to three hours covers it comfortably. Altitude is the real constraint: 3,454 m makes people slower and shorter of breath than they expect, so plan less than you think.
